I did not expect my 2026 Spider-Man 2 PC sessions to become a referendum on Peter Parker’s cheekbones, yet here we are. A new mod has restored John Bubniak’s original face over Ben Jordan’s, and I have never subscribed to a cosmetic change so fast while also whispering, ‘What are we doing, people?’ Is this nostalgia, or did Insomniac’s 2020 face swap quietly rewire my brain? Honestly, both. The mod is called John Bubniak’s Face Over Ben Jordan Face, it comes from CarlosRPG5555 on Nexus Mods, and its mission is beautifully simple: put the 2018 launch face back on the PC version of the sequel. We are now deep enough into 2026 that I can say this with love: the modding community saw a controversial recast and treated it like a loose thread on a sweater. Yank.

The Mod Is Glorious, Slightly Haunted

Let me be clear: I am not here to relitigate the great face debate of 2020 with a legal brief. I am here because the mod exists, it works well enough to be funny, and it proves that PC players will absolutely take game preservation into their own hands when a studio sticks with a divisive decision. Insomniac swapped Peter’s face for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on PS5, and the studio has stayed the course ever since. Fine. But on PC, the community has options, and one of those options is apparently ‘make Peter look like the guy from 2018 again.’

According to the modder, there are still some visual bugs. My favorite? Peter has trouble closing his eyes. Fantastic. My hero, staring into my soul at 3 a.m. while I try to photograph a symbiote. It is early days for this kind of mod, and I assume the eye-closing situation will get patched, but I would be lying if I said the haunted-doll energy did not make me laugh. A face mod that restores nostalgia and accidentally creates a sleep-deprived mannequin? That is peak PC gaming.

My verdict Glorious, cursed, and deeply on-brand

Modders Are Already Doing Modder Things

What surprises me is not that someone made this mod. It is that someone made it so quickly. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had only been on PC for a few days before modders started poking around, which is the PC equivalent of guests rearranging your furniture before dessert. And honestly? Good. Modding was a huge part of the original Marvel’s Spider-Man on PC. The base game had plenty of suits, but modders went wild with crossovers and creative nonsense. One mod added a suit from Invincible, which tells you everything about the energy in this community. If someone can drop Invincible into Spider-Man, of course they can drop Bubniak back into Peter. The question was never ‘Can they?’ It was ‘How long until they do?’

This is why I still get a kick out of PC launches, even messy ones. Modders do not wait for a formal invitation. They see a character model, a controversial change, and a free weekend, and they start cooking. Sometimes the result is a masterpiece. Sometimes it is a face-swap with an eye-closing glitch that makes Peter look like he is buffering during a emotional scene. Either way, I am entertained.

The Port’s Rough Start Still Stings

Now, I cannot pretend everything is sunshine and web fluid. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launched on PC to ‘Mixed’ Steam reviews, and the complaints were not subtle: crashes, performance issues, the usual port-launch gremlins. That was a surprise because Nixxes has a stellar record with PlayStation PC ports. I still believe in the studio, but ‘Mixed’ reviews are not the homecoming parade anyone wanted. By 2026, I hope those issues are a bad memory, because the game deserves a smooth ride. A face mod can make me laugh, but it cannot fix a frame-time spike.

Still, the mod scene is a good sign. It means players are invested enough to tinker, joke, and preserve the version of Peter they grew up with. Will I keep the mod installed? Probably. Will I fix the eye bug myself? Absolutely not. I am not a hero. I am a player with a screenshot folder and a questionable sense of humor. And if Peter has to stare unblinkingly into my soul for a while, well, that is the price of nostalgia.
